hello again

Hello everyone. I decided to give you all a brief update. My animated short "Getting Out" has recently been accepted into the NYC Picturestart Film Festival in Manhattan. It was pretty cool because it was in a bar/nightclub setting and even though it was small, there were a lot of people there. This film festival only accepted 15 shorts out of several hundred submissions. I always get nervous whenever my work is going to be shown because I never know how people will react but everyone seemed to really enjoy it. I thought maybe I might have a chance at winning their audience choice award. Of course, I didn't win anything and I didn't expect to be as disappointed as I was. I guess because I got a great response from the crowd that maybe my hopes were too high. Oh well. At least it got accepted into the festival.
I've also been applying to more jobs on and off. I didn't think getting a graphic design job would be so difficult. Especially when I have some experience under my belt. All I really want right now is a descent job at a company. Is that so fucking much to ask for? Seriously. I'm still looking for animation too and working more on my portfolio. One graphic design position I applied for, he actually gave me some good advice. Well, it wasn't really advice but he sent me a pdf document. Basically, since I can't update my website, I had to e-mail him my graphic design work in 3 separate e-mails which was annoying to do. He replied back and sent me a pdf of the companies portfolio and explained that this is what he sends to clients. It had all of his work in one pdf file, and you can scroll down to view more work.. It was almost like a catalog of his work all in one file. I never thought of doing that so last night I replied back and sent all of my work in one pdf file. Hopefully, he will appreciate it and was impressed that I figured out how to do that. We'll see.
Also, don't forget to look at my blogsite. http://istmin.blogspot.com. I've updated it since the last time. See ya.

Well I decided to update a bit again. I have finally started a blogsite where I will be posting new and working progress works. It is http://istmin.blogspot.com. I don't know if anyone looks at it but I do it anyway because I like to show people my work to get a reaction. I'm working on something new I started over the weekend so hopefully I'll have it done by the end of the week.

As career goes, I'm still at the publishing company but the good thing is that they are having me do more graphic design work. I got to redesign one of their book covers and now they are letting me design a new book cover for a book they are currently working on about Merv Griffin. He was before my time but a lot of people know who is he. So far the cover design is going pretty well. They had to pay $200 for a photograph of Merv that they couldn't find on the internet. It's a nice pic of him though. Hopefully this book will get published and you will finally see a published book with my book cover design on it. The back cover is going to be a bit more difficult to do but I think it'll work out. I might post some of that work on my blogsite as well. I also want to redesign my website but that is going to take a while to do and I'm not even sure I have the time.

I've also been looking for more jobs in the meantime. Apparently, the only thing I can get our internships in Film production which is really annoying considering that I've interned many times before already and I really just need a job. I have an interview tonight for an internship at a film company that does motion graphics work so hopefully I'll get to do some of that. I'm currently interning right now but it's almost a waste of my time. I basically do bullshit office work and I'm not getting a chance to use any of my skills. I intern once a week at a film company in Manhattan and my boss at the publishing company is okay with it. I might actually quit it soon though if nothing picks up.

I'm also working more on my comic. I've actually been writing a lot more of it and so far I think it's going pretty well even though I had some bumps on the road. I have about 7 pages drawn but I want to redraw one of the pages. It's frustrating because I know I can draw yet sometimes things still don't exactly turn out right. It's also taking a while because I work five days a week so I think I'm going to work four days a week from now on. Nothing is set in stone yet and I'm not sure if my boss would be happy with that.

Well anyway, please check my blogsite when you get a chance. Thanks.

Wow, I haven't posted in a really long time. A lot has happened since my last post.
I am no longer interning with the independent animator in NY. That ended in October. Apparently the guy was really neurotic and he basically got rid of me after 6 weeks when it was suppose to last 3 months. We basically didn't get along and he thought I worked too slow, but I was still learning things and he even told me there wasn't a deadline so that's his own fault. That's okay. I don't think it would have led to a job anyway and I did learn a bit more about Flash.
Well after that venture I interned at another company in NY that created online video games for websites. The funny thing about that was that it was in the same building that my internship with the independent animator was in. I interned at the video game website company for a month and then I got a freelance job from them that was suppose to last a month. Unfortunately, they fired me after a week and said I wasn't ready for it and didn't have enough experience. I was kind of shocked and wasn't expecting that to happen. Then one of my ex coworkers insulted me and said my drawings were poor. Who the fuck does he think he is anyway? I didn't see him doing any drawings there. I really wish I stood up for myself a little bit but I mean, what do you say when someone insults you like that. It was just down right insulting. I actually looked back recently at a sketch I did for them and I guess it wasn't that good but whatever. I think I have improved a lot since then and feel much more confident now with my drawing ability and feel like I'm going in the direction I want to be going in. Maybe that was a good thing he said that because it made me work harder. I'm not sure. But it was just pretty upsetting too because I did like the people there. And I really wish they could have trained me more. I did learn a lot on Flash by reading a book before I interned there but I guess that wasn't enough.
When I did interned there that previous month, I did sketches for them for a video game idea they were going to pitch. They said if they get it, they'll call me to work on it more. That was in Mid December and they still haven't called. Maybe I should e-mail them but a part of me doesn't really want to go back working there since they fired me once before. It's difficult to walk back in their again because I'm afraid that I might not be able to prove myself and get fired again. They also might have prejudged me and think that I'm not really qualified.
I never told my parents that I was fired so I still went into the city everyday having them think I still had a job. I didn't want them to know because it would just complicate things and maybe they would be disappointed in me. So for the next two and half weeks, I would go into a Barnes and Noble and I decided to work on my comic book idea that I've had for some time. I'm trying to work on a comic book series that is based off of my animated short called "Getting Out". I also read a book about writing scripts so I had some time to do my own work and learn more about writing. I would also draw the people at Barnes and Nobles so at least I had the opportunity to draw people from observation.
It was interesting being there consistently because I actually saw some of the same people there everyday. I was pretty surprised. Usually around lunch time you would see some of the same people eating there. I would also occasionally look around at their books.
In the meantime, I was also applying to some more jobs and I ended up getting an animation test  at an animation studio in NY. I guess it was just great timing to be given the test now because I actually had time to work on it. I thought it came out good but I didn't get the job. But I applied to a publishing company a little bit ago and something told me to call them. I'm not sure what it was.  I guess it was instinct. I called them to just make sure they got my resume. They didn't so I ended up resending it and they offered me the job.
So now I'm an editorial assistant at a publishing company in Staten Island and I started working there around mid January. Unfortunately, it doesn't pay as much money as I would like but at least I get a steady pay check every week and the work environment is pretty interesting. Apparently about 50 people applied so I have no idea how I even got this job in the first place.
But I'm still looking for better jobs out there and that are closer to commute too and more art related. I've had some interviews here and there but nothing pulled through. Even though they didn't lead to anywhere, it was a pretty positive experience because they really did like my work a lot and it made me feel good about myself. Right now I mainly do a lot of research over the internet to confirm facts for travel guides that they publish.  I did get to redesign a book cover on the biography of Michael Jackson which was pretty fun but I haven't gotten anymore graphic design work lately.
On a more upbeat note, my animated short "Getting Out" was accepted into four festivals so far! Yay for me!. I also have an interview tomorrow at a tv production studio for an internship. I figured I can go once a week or something and see what it's like and hopefully, it'll lead to a job. They happen to call me a few days ago and I don't even remember applying to them. It must have been some really fast e-mail I did or something. The name didn't ring a bell. I thought that was pretty funny. I have also been doing some new illustration work recently. I will be posting it on http://istmin.blogspot.com. Check it out when you get a chance. See ya.

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Hey everyone. Time for a quick update. Right now I found a better internship where I am working with an independent animator in NYC. I really like it there and i'm learning a lot about Flash Animation. I'll be doing that for three months. I also just found out my animated short "Getting Out" got into its first film festival! I'm thinking about going because it's not to far away from Ny. The festival is located in Philadelphia, PA. I'm really excited and it just really encourages me to continue doing my own work. Well thats it for now. See ya.
P.S. I'll be posting more artwork soon.

Hey everyone. I guess I should update more often but I've been kind of busy. It's been a little tough finding a job. Their aren't really any animation jobs available right now and the few that I've applied to have rejected me. So far I've been applying to whatever places I feel I can handle the job. I mean, I haven't really been looking too much until about a few weeks ago. I've been interning at this place for almost a month and a half and they said I would be doing animation in aftereffects but so far I haven't been doing that at all. I've been designing characters. I mean, I don't mind that but I would have preferred doing more animation. So I'm a little frustrated but at least Im doing something. And I have been liking what I'm doing and can add it to my portfolio so I guess that's good also. I also got another internship with this freelance animator from Parsons and I'm basically going to be learning the business aspect of things and hopefully I'll be doing some animation. I really hope I can do some animation work. And the guy said he would provide me with a metro card and lunch money. Anyway, here is some new work that I did.

These are characters that I designed in school but I decided to redraw and paint them.

This was something that I had to do for my internship that I'm at now. I had my take braham lincoln and make him into a child. I thought it came out pretty well.

I recently applied to a company as a 2-d game artist. Preparing my portfolio took so fucking long. I wanted to redo some things and print new work out before mailing it out. That stuff takes so long. It ended up taking the whole day. Well it's finally overwith. I hope I can get an interview or something but the only thing is that they are looking with someone with at least 2 years of experience. Unfortunately, I don't have that but I still wanted to give it a shot. Wish me luck.
